A classic prewar apartment reimagined for long-term living. Architecture and interiors were developed together, using deep color, tailored millwork, and custom furnishings to give each room a distinct identity while maintaining a consistent language throughout the residence.
Designed for long-term living
A pair of large doors interrupted the apartment's gallery, limiting how the space could be furnished and used. We relocated the doors to the adjoining hallway, a move that also followed the building's original design logic by Emery Roth. This made the gallery a more functional arrival space, with room for a console, artwork, and a clearer progression into the apartment.
A custom dry bar was introduced at the end of the gallery. Beyond providing storage and serving space, it gives the ceiling composition a more intentional termination and creates opportunities for integrated lighting and artwork. It also relieves the compact kitchen of some of its storage and entertaining demands. Within the kitchen, additional cabinetry was carefully incorporated to improve everyday function without making the room feel crowded.
The second bedroom was reconsidered as both a home office and guest room. A custom leather desk was designed to fit the roomβs exact dimensions, giving the workspace a sense of permanence and individuality while preserving the flexibility to accommodate overnight guests.
Together, these changes allow previously underused areas to support more of the ownersβ daily life while respecting the character of this Emery Roth-designed prewar building.
βHe is not only highly qualified and precise, but his attention to detail at every stage of the process was exceptional. From navigating permits to working seamlessly with our co-op board, everything was handled professionally and meticulously.β
